vSphere 6.0 now available for download!

VMware has finally made the vSphere 6.0 official release available for download!

VMware ESXi 6.0
VMware vCenter Server 6.0

Pretty exciting stuff!  I have tested the vSphere 6 beta and such and it seemed to offer some neat stuff but the version I was using didn’t have the new web client and was still seemingly Flash based.  So, I am anxious to try out the official ESXi 6.0 and see how the web client has been changed as I do like the web client for its features but do not like that it’s slow.

You can see below that VMware released 5.1 only one year after 5.0 went GA.  Then, 5.5 GA was available approximately one year after 5.1 went GA:

  • VMware ESXi 5.0 GA (Build 469512) (24 August 2011)
  • VMware ESXi 5.0 Update 1 (Build 623860) (15 March 2012)
  • VMware ESXi 5.0 Update 2 (Build 914586) (20 December 2012)
  • VMware ESXi 5.0 Update 3 (Build 1311175) (17 October 2013)
  • VMware ESXi 5.1 GA (Build 799733) (10 September 2012)
  • VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 1 (Build 1065491) (25 April 2013)
  • VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 2 (Build 1483097) (16 January 2014)
  • VMware ESXi 5.5 GA (Build 1331820) (22 September 2013)
  • VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 (Build 1623387) (11 March 2014)
  • VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 (Build 2068190) (9 September 2014)

That leaves VMware ESXi 6.0 GA the longest update since the old 2.5 – 3.5 days at 536 days between the last GA release.  Pretty long from a VMware historical point of view!

Below is a quick look at some high-level changes for vSphere 6.0:
