VMware tools in Windows 10 working on ESXi 5.5

There’s already an update for Windows 10 Server Technical Preview: I’m trying to figure out specifically what they’ve updated already but I’ve seen it documented as a kernel update.  It requires a reboot of the server.

Windows 10 Server and VMware ESXi 5.5

So as could be expected, Windows 10 Server (Tech Preview) has no clue what to do with VMware tools when running VMware ESXi 5.5 which I guess is not entirely surprising.  Enabling the VMware tools installation results in a brief white window flicker and then nothing. There is no CD mounted in the guest OS so there’s not much that can be done.  The only issue with this, as you can see, is that there is an unrecognized ethernet...

Windows 10 Tech Preview Datacenter only available as VHD

Interesting – not sure how I feel about this yet… but I think Microsoft understands why people use Windows Server Datacenter.  Most people do not use the Datacenter version on physical hardware because the whole point of the Datacenter version is that there’s unlimited licensing for virtual guests.
